Wire Glue
Submitted by kamann on October 5, 2010 - 10:07am
What do people recommend for glue when gluing the wire into an Epee? I've tried a couple of different things, and have had some success with Super Glue, but over time I always seem to have problems with the wire popping out.
Any suggestions?
Wire Glue
Most people nowadays use superglue. No matter what you use, eventually the wire will come out.
Lots of the old timers use what is called "the swiss glue". It's pretty much a version of airplane glue. It works well and lasts a long time, remaing very flexible. It's a pain to apply, however, especially for Foil. It also takes forever and a day to dry.
I like the superglue method best. The thing about superglue is that the groove must be ABSOLUTELY clean and dry in order for the glue to work and hold. Any old glue, grease, or moisture will prevent any adherence. That's the number one reason that the wire pops out. The second most common mistake is that people tend to use too much glue. Four drops max will glue the length of the wire sufficiently. Because of the nature of the superglues, the more you use the less effective they are.
I recommend Hobby Lobby's house brand of ultra thin superglue. It's thinner than water and I have had great success with it. The bottle has a pink label and can be found in the modelling section. The smallest bottle will rewire in excess of a hundred blades.
